Gary Gamboa
Gary Gamboa understands recovery from both sides—as someone who found freedom from addiction in 2015 and as a dedicated treatment professional committed to helping others discover the same hope and healing he experienced.
"Recovery isn't just about stopping use—it's about learning to live a life worth living. I'm here to walk that path with you."
A Life Transformed by Recovery
For Gary Gamboa, recovery is not an abstract concept—it's a lived reality that shapes every decision he makes as Co-Founder and Program Director of Desert Mountain Healing IOP. In recovery since 2015, Gary's personal journey through addiction and into sustained wellness gives him unique insight into the struggles, fears, and triumphs that clients experience daily.
Gary doesn't just manage programs from behind a desk. He's actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the facility, ensuring that every client receives the compassionate, individualized care they deserve. His leadership style is rooted in humility, honesty, and a deep belief that recovery is possible for everyone—no matter how many times they've tried before.
Clients often describe Gary as approachable, grounded, and genuinely invested in their success. He understands that recovery isn't a straight line, and he meets people where they are—without judgment, without shame, and with a steady belief in their potential.
From Personal Recovery to Program Leadership
Gary's path into addiction treatment was born out of his own recovery journey. After achieving sobriety in 2015, he realized that his experiences—both the pain of addiction and the hope of recovery—could serve a greater purpose. Rather than simply rebuilding his own life, he felt called to help others do the same.
In 2023, Gary partnered with Sean Roberts to co-found Desert Mountain Healing IOP, bringing together their combined decades of recovery experience to create a treatment center rooted in compassion, dignity, and real-world understanding. As Program Director, Gary oversees all aspects of treatment programming, from intake and orientation to discharge planning and alumni support.
Key Responsibilities
- Overseeing daily operations and treatment programming
- Collaborating with clinical staff to ensure quality care
- Developing and refining client intake and assessment processes
- Building community partnerships and referral networks
- Maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations
- Supporting staff development and training initiatives
- Ensuring a culture of respect, accountability, and hope
Gary's hands-on leadership approach ensures that Desert Mountain Healing remains a place where staff and clients alike feel valued, supported, and empowered to grow.
Leading with Empathy and Accountability
Gary's leadership philosophy is simple but powerful: treat people the way you wish you had been treated when you were struggling.
He believes that effective recovery programming requires more than clinical expertise—it requires heart. That means creating an environment where clients feel safe to be honest, where mistakes are learning opportunities rather than failures, and where every individual is seen as a person worthy of dignity and respect.
Core Leadership Values
- Compassion: Understanding that addiction is a disease, not a moral failing
- Accountability: Holding clients and staff to high standards while offering grace
- Transparency: Communicating openly and honestly about expectations and challenges
- Hope: Believing in every client's capacity for change, even when they don't believe in themselves
- Community: Building a culture where clients feel they belong and are never alone
Gary's leadership isn't about authority—it's about service. He leads by example, showing up every day with the same commitment to growth, honesty, and recovery that he asks of his clients and staff.
Creating the Treatment Center He Wished He'd Had
When Gary looks back on his own journey through addiction, he remembers the treatment experiences that didn't work—the places that felt cold, clinical, or judgmental. He also remembers the moments of genuine connection that did make a difference: the counselor who saw his potential, the peer who believed in him when he didn't believe in himself, the moment he realized he wasn't alone.
Desert Mountain Healing IOP was built to be that place of connection, compassion, and real recovery. Gary wanted to create a treatment center where:
- Clients are treated with dignity, not as cases or numbers
- Staff members in recovery are celebrated, not hidden
- Treatment is individualized and flexible, not one-size-fits-all
- Families are included and supported throughout the process
- Long-term recovery is the goal, not just short-term sobriety
- Hope is at the center of everything
For Gary, Desert Mountain Healing isn't just a business—it's a mission. Every policy, every program decision, and every interaction is guided by one question: Is this what I would have wanted for myself when I was in treatment?
Hands-On Leadership and Client Support
As Program Director, Gary wears many hats. On any given day, you might find him:
- Meeting with new clients during intake and orientation
- Sitting in on group sessions to stay connected to client experiences
- Collaborating with therapists and medical providers to adjust treatment plans
- Resolving operational challenges to ensure smooth daily operations
- Mentoring staff members and fostering professional development
- Building relationships with community partners and referral sources
- Checking in with clients one-on-one to see how they're doing
Gary's presence at Desert Mountain Healing is felt in every corner of the facility. He's not a distant administrator—he's an active, engaged leader who believes that the best way to understand what clients need is to stay close to their experiences.
Clients often describe Gary as someone who genuinely cares, who listens without judgment, and who celebrates their progress—no matter how small. His encouragement and belief in their potential become powerful motivators on their recovery journey.
Working with Gary
When you work with Gary, whether in a leadership capacity or as a client interacting with the programs he oversees, you can expect:
- Honesty: Gary doesn't sugarcoat the challenges of recovery, but he balances truth with hope
- Respect: He treats every person—regardless of their past—with dignity and compassion
- Accessibility: Gary makes himself available to clients and staff, maintaining an open-door policy
- Accountability: He sets high standards and holds people to them, while offering support along the way
- Encouragement: Gary celebrates progress and reminds clients of how far they've come, especially on difficult days
- Lived Experience: He speaks from personal experience and understands the journey intimately
Gary's leadership creates a culture where recovery is not just possible—it's expected. And when clients see his example, they begin to believe that they, too, can build a life worth living.
Turning Pain into Purpose
Gary didn't plan to work in addiction treatment—he didn't have a childhood dream of becoming a Program Director. But after experiencing the devastating impact of addiction and the transformative power of recovery, he felt called to give back.
"I know what it's like to feel hopeless," Gary says. "I know what it's like to think you'll never get better, that you're too broken to fix. And I also know what it's like to wake up one day and realize you're living a life you never thought possible. If I can help even one person get to that place, then all of this is worth it."
Gary chose this field because he believes in second chances—and third chances, and fourth chances. He knows that recovery isn't linear, and he's committed to walking alongside clients through every setback and every victory.
You Don't Have to Do This Alone
"If you're reading this, you might be struggling. You might be scared, tired, or unsure if recovery is even possible for you. I want you to know: it is. I've been where you are, and I've seen thousands of people walk the path from addiction to recovery. It's not easy, but it's worth it. And you don't have to do it alone.
At Desert Mountain Healing, we don't just treat addiction—we help people rebuild their lives. We meet you where you are, without judgment, and walk with you every step of the way. Whether this is your first time seeking help or your tenth, we're here. And we believe in you, even if you don't believe in yourself yet.
Recovery is possible. Hope is real. And a better life is waiting for you. Let us help you find it."
